Hellas Snatch Up Melbourne Victory and FC Bayern Pathway Talent

Australian Championship winners and NPL Victoria heavyweights South Melbourne FC have been busy in the transfer market, announcing the signing of five attacking players since 8 January. One addition that has quickly caught the attention of our scouts and analysts is young starlet James Lackay, officially unveiled on Monday, 12 January 2026.

Lackay, who has made several appearances across Melbourne Victory’s youth and NPL squads, looks set to bolster Hellas’ attacking options with his pace, dribbling ability, and intelligent link-up play. In 2024, the exciting forward travelled abroad as part of the FC Bayern Pathway, an international development program that selects talented players from overseas and allows them to test themselves against some of the best young prospects in world football. Lackay impressed during the experience, even holding his own against FC Bayern’s U19 players, and now returns with valuable exposure at the highest level.

With the strong structure and momentum, South Melbourne FC continues to build, and fans can expect an exciting season ahead in NPL Victoria. Football Director Peter Kokotis praised the youngster’s experience both locally and abroad, saying, “James is a young player with real upside. We are excited to see his growth at Lakeside Stadium.”

Lackay’s first test in blue and white begins on Sunday, 18 January, as South Melbourne travels to prepare for the inaugural Oceania Professional League. The new competition kicks off in Auckland, New Zealand, featuring professional clubs from across the region, including A-League outfit Auckland FC. The focus will then turn back home as Hellas prepare for a blockbuster NPL Victoria Round 1 clash against Avondale FC in February.

Observation: With his direct style and hunger to take on defenders one-on-one, James Lackay has all the qualities to become a fan favourite, especially if he continues to turn dangerous situations into goals, as we have already seen.

Recommendation: Improving the consistency of his delivery into the six-yard box would add another dimension to Hellas’ attack, while his ability to beat defenders in a high press already stands out.
